Ontarians to pay even more for broken energy plan

Vic Fedeli — Canada Free Press — September 12, 2012

QUEEN’S PARK – Dalton McGuinty’s failed energy plan will continue to unnecessarily cost Ontarians hundreds of millions of dollars more each year, PC Energy Critic and Nipissing MPP Vic Fedeli charged today.

It forecasts power demand in Ontario will actually shrink in 2013, and periods of surplus power generation where we sell electricity to Quebec and the United States at a loss will increase in frequency.Fedeli responded after the Independent Electricity System Operator (IESO) issued its latest 18-month outlook for power demand in the province.

“We have 600,000 people out of work in Ontario, and this government has shed 300,000 manufacturing jobs.  This forecast assumes what we already know – Dalton McGuinty has no plan to create jobs and grow our economy,” said Fedeli.

“Instead, we’ll continue the vicious circle of paying others to take our power so they can compete even harder with Ontario for jobs and investment,” added Fedeli, who notes Ontario lost $420 million selling surplus power in the first 10 months of 2011.

The outlook also stresses the need for increased flexibility in Ontario’s energy supply mix.  Fedeli says that’s a clear signal from the IESO the practice of putting our most heavily subsidized and most costly power on the grid first—wind and solar – must end.
