Ontario Liberals continue to prove that the Green Energy Act is a misguided policy

Last Tuesday, the office of Chris Bentley, the Ontario Minister of Energy, announced that the Minister would the following day announce an update on a program that would allow industrial businesses to buy electricity at discounted rates if they were adding jobs to the province. The announcement was to take place at a Scarborough college campus.

The next day, the event was cancelled and the announcement postponed. Staff at the Minister’s office said this week that the program, which was first announced in June and supposed to launch on Jan. 1, 2013, is still going ahead, although it is unclear if the timelines remain. They “hope to have an announcement next week,” the Post was told in an email.

Fair enough. And there’s been no public indication from those in the industry that the government is rethinking its position on the issue. It’s just that one could understand, at a time when the Liberals seem heavily invested in not making any new problems for their next leader, why they might want to soft-pedal this program at present. It boils down to this: the government is heavily subsidizing the electricity costs of large businesses while it is at the same time asking residential consumers to pay sharply rising prices.
