Activists pressure tactics to force Canada to list polar bears as ‘threatened’ have failed

The Center for Biological Diversity has failed in its bid to use NAFTA (North American Free Trade Agreement) to pressure Canada to list polar bears as a species ‘threatened’ with extinction — wrapping up a story I wrote about twice last year (here and here).

The CBC reported on June 6, 2014(“NAFTA panel won’t review Canada’s polar bear policy“):

Vote rejects request for investigation into why Canada won’t designate bears threatened, endangered.”

“An international trade panel has decided not to review whether Canada is enforcing its own environmental legislation to protect its polar bear population.

    It’s economic.Canada issues permits for polar bears. Big game hunters pay a good price to shoot them as trophies.

    Canada also allows brown bears and grizzlies to be hunted and also exported to china to be caged for the rest of their lives to “harvest” their bile.

    I did a personal research on this a few years ago and was shocked that Canada promotes this.

    More of Canada’s policies on bear import/export – black bears. I’m still looking for a comprehensive document and run across some other informative documents.
