In our earlier days, we used to just grab something from the shelf and use it without questioning. But now we have become more aware of what is inside those products before using them in our daily lives. We are also more aware that these fasteners come with a lot of risks attached. There is no doubt about it that every one of us has bought a product like this without knowing exactly what was being used for or how they were made. So let’s take an example of a screw – a very common fastener, which manufacturers always coat the threads on the screws before selling them. 

As you might already know, a thread is basically a groove cut into a piece of metal. A screw is nothing but a rod made up of two sections – a head and a shaft (which can be threaded as well). If you look at a picture of a screw, you will see that it looks somewhat similar to the letter “T” – the head of the screw and the shaft make up the top part of the T while its lower section makes up the bottom side. To attach things together using a screw, the screw needs to be inserted into the hole in the other object and then tightened by turning the nut placed over the head of the screw. It is important to note here that the nut does not actually do any work. All it does is keep the screw tightly secured in place while the user turns the nut. Therefore, the manufacturer puts a coating on the threads of the screw. This coating helps in making sure that the nut is securely held onto the head of the screw when the user turns the nut.

Now, what is this coating? Why do manufacturers put it on the threads of the screw? When you turn the nut, the threads of the screw get damaged because there is friction between the nut and the threads of the screw. If this happens with all your screws, then pretty soon your nuts would start coming off the heads of the screws. But this is only one example of how manufacturers coat the threads of their fasteners. What I want you to understand here is that every single fastener manufactured today comes coated with some sort of lubricant. These are either called “grease”, “oil”, “wax” etc. You may wonder why manufacturers coat all the fasteners with such substances. Well, it has got something to do with the fact that most people use fasteners and tools in harsh conditions. For instance, when you drive a nail into wood, it could shatter the end of the nail. Now, even though the nail did not break completely, the shavings left behind could damage the fastening surface if you don’t apply some sort of lubricant on the area where the nail is hitting the wood. Similarly, when you hammer a screw into a hard surface, the threads of the screw could wear out. In such cases, the grease or oil applied by the manufacturer protects the fastening surface and makes sure that the threads of the screw remain intact. 

I hope you are now getting an idea as to why manufacturers always coat the fasteners before selling them. Now, if you are wondering why manufacturers do not simply sell the fasteners coated with grease or oil, that is because they need to protect the screws from being damaged by such substances. If you buy unscrewed fasteners, chances are that it will get ruined after a few uses. 

So what should you do if you want to avoid such problems? Well, you can simply buy the fasteners that are pre-coated with a sealant. They don’t necessarily need to be greased or waxed, so you won’t have to worry about the fasteners wearing out quickly. 

Manufacturing processes involve lots of steps, each of which is done manually. Even now, the manufacturing process of fasteners involves cutting and shaping the material to form the shape of a fastener. Then the fastener is given a protective coating, which gives it its durability and strength. After that, the fasteners are packed and shipped to various parts of the world. However, in the past, the manufacturing process was much simpler. Back then, the manufacturers used to simply melt the metals required to make fasteners. These molten materials were shaped into threads and then cooled down to form fasteners. 

Since the manufacturing process back then involved lots of manual labor, the quality of the fasteners produced was never consistent. Also, since the production methods were primitive, many of the fasteners failed due to cracks or breaks occurring during their manufacturing process.
